Saint Simeon’s Hosts Butterfly Garden Dedication

A butterly benchA portion of Saint Simeon’s Gazebo Courtyard has been transformed into a home for butterflies. Saint Simeon’s hosted the dedication of the Marilynn Lane Memorial Garden on Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m. Mrs. Lane, who was a former Resident of Saint Simeon’s, is being honored by her husband Don, whose generous gift made the butterfly garden possible.

The Butterfly Garden adds even more color and life to Saint Simeon’s already vibrant Gazebo Courtyard. The garden is complete with a metal butterfly bench designed by Lisa Regan of Garden Deva and plants and flowers that are known to attract butterflies. Additionally, Darin Berryhill of Berryhill Ornamental Iron created a trellis for the garden. Sixty-four butterflies were released during the garden’s dedication, and it is hoped that many of them will choose to make the garden their new home.

David Walker, Education Supervisor of Informal Programs for the Tulsa Zoo, designed the space. Walker generously donated his time and talent, and knowledge of butterflies, to create a garden of lasting beauty and benefit for butterflies. Steve Nessler of Newlawn and Landscape installed and planted the garden. Sarah Matson Westover, artist, created a special piece to be installed indoors near the garden. It serves as a reminder of Marilynn’s spirit when the garden is dormant. Entertainment during the dedication was provided by accordion player Frank Gesinski in honor of Mrs. Lane, who was an avid accordion player.

Marilynn Lane Memorial Garden“Marilynn and I both gratefully appreciated the care and attention she received during her final five months at Saint Simeon’s,” said Don Lane, Butterfly Garden Benefactor. “During her time at Saint Simeon’s, we enjoyed Simone the golden retriever, the gardens, peacocks, and church services with such a great priest, Father Bill Holly. Marilynn always said, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ She would have loved the butterfly garden with the release of the butterflies, which share her love for travel.”
